YAYA is the Youth and Young Adult Network of the National Farm Worker Ministry (NFWM). NFWM is an interfaith organization that supports farm workers who are organizing for equality and justice. YAYA was created to support a national network of young people actively working for this purpose.
There are YAYA members and groups around the country, located in different high schools, universities, congregations, and communities.
Inspired by the non-violence principles of the farm worker movement, YAYAs support a variety of national and local campaigns, led by farm workers. These campaigns seek to improve the oppressive conditions that farm workers live and work under. YAYAs educate people and institutions about the conditions facing farm workers in this country and activate them to support their campaigns. YAYA members work with farm workers through a diverse array of activities, such as letter writing campaigns, peaceful marches, awareness events, research projects, immersion trips and more.
The majority of the food that we eat is planted and harvested by farm workers, who very often are young people, like you.
Farm workers earn very low wages, suffer exposure to pesticides, lack many labor rights and in extreme cases, are victims of modern day slavery. If you ate today, you are connected to a farm worker. You can help change the food industry so that workers are safe and can live with dignity.
- 85% of our fruits and vegetables are hand picked. Without our nation’s 2-3 million farm workers our multibillion-dollar agricultural industry would not survive.
- Farm workers labor long hours for low wages, doing one of the most dangerous jobs in the country.
- Farm workers are exposed to toxic pesticides, causing rashes, illness and birth defects.
- Most farm workers lack health insurance, workers compensation, disability insurance or sick pay.
- Farm workers die in the fields every year from heat and dehydration.
